Frequently Asked Questions

What is herbalism?

Throughout history humans learned and practiced the art of using plants to support health. Cultures all over the world developed intimate partnerships with local plants and deep understandings of their many uses. This wisdom was systematically and often violently oppressed, suppressed, and devalued by the racist and sexist imperialist forces that shaped our modern world. Still, herbalism is sustained worldwide in many forms.

Herbalism is a gentle, supportive, holistic practice of connecting plants and humans to promote health and balance. Herbalists consider the body, mind, and spirit as they identify plant allies to guide people toward the experience of wholeness. These plants work with the body, mind and spirit to build and nurture overall health without causing side effects or dependencies. Rather than aiming to reduce the sensation of symptoms,  herbalists work with plants to strengthen and balance individual constitutions. Through plants, people may take charge of their own wellness and learn ways to care for themselves with naturally available resources.

What about doctors?

An herbalist is neither a doctor nor a psychologist. Doctors, psychologists, and herbalists each hold valuable and unique skillsets which may complement one another as health resources. Herbalists do not seek to replace doctors and psychologists but rather work to support the systems of the body, mind, and spirit so that people may experience greater health and wholeness than is possible from allopathic medicine alone.

What is plant spirit work?

Integral to the traditions of herbalism around the world is the belief that plants possess intelligent, compassionate spirits capable of assisting humans in their journeys toward health and balance. Plants are seen as divine, powerful beings and their role in supporting health extends beyond the physical body.  While one certainly does not have to share this spiritual worldview to benefit from incorporating herbs into their life there is great transformation possible in the practice of intentionally calling in the Spirit within plants for loving guidance.
